Paper Recycling

Paper recycling means reusing old paper (like newspapers, cartons, notebooks) to make new paper. This helps reduce waste, save trees, and protect the environment 🌱

Steps in paper recycling

1. Collection

Used paper is collected from homes, offices, schools, and recycling bins.

Examples:

• Newspapers

• Cardboard

• Old books

• Office paper

2. Sorting

The paper is sorted by type and quality.

• Clean paper is separated from dirty or oily paper

• Paper is separated from plastic, metal, or food waste

Dirty paper usually cannot be recycled.

3. Shredding and pulping

The sorted paper is:

• Cut into small pieces

• Mixed with water and chemicals

This mixture forms a thick paste called pulp.

4. Cleaning and de-inking

• Ink, glue, staples, and dirt are removed

• The pulp is washed and filtered

• Chemicals or air bubbles remove ink from printed paper

5. Pressing and drying

• The clean pulp is spread into thin sheets

• Water is pressed out

• Sheets are dried using heat

6. Making new paper

The dried sheets are rolled, cut, and turned into:

• New paper

• Cardboard

• Tissue paper

• Paper bags

What is Recycling?

Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into reusable objects to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, energy usage, air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by decreasing the need for "conventional" waste disposal and lowering greenhouse gas emissions compared to plastic production.

PET Recycling

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), is the type of plastic labelled with the #1 code on or near the bottom of bottles and containers. It is commonly used as beverage bottles for carbonated soft drinks, bottled water, milk, juice, sports and energy drinks, jars, punnets, tubs and trays for food items, bottles for household, personal care and pharmaceutical products, and sheet and film for packaging.

Cardboard Recycling

Cardboard recycling is the reprocessing and reuse of thick sheets or stiff multilayered papers that have been used, discarded or regarded as waste. Cardboard boxes are usually heavy-duty or thick-sheets of paper known for their durability and hardness. Examples of cardboard include packaging boxes, egg cartoons, shoe boxes, and cereal boxes. Recycling cardboard is done as a way of keeping the environment green.

Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" waste hierarchy.

Discarded PET bottles are collected, baled and delivered to the recycling plant. The collected bottles are sorted according to colour and polymer, de-labelled (where possible) and the caps and rings are removed, which are generally manufactured from polypropylene for which there is a demand, so they get recycled too.

Apart from the economic impact, the environmental savings of recycling metal are enormous. Recycling steel and tin cans, for example, saves 74% of the energy used to produce them.

The main types of cardboard we find at home are corrugated cardboard (i.e. packing boxes) and the types used for food and drink packaging such as cereal boxes, egg cartons, cardboard sleeves or boxes from ready meals etc. Both types are recyclable but sometimes collected separately.

Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, tires, textiles and electronics. The composting or other reuse of biodegradable waste such as food or garden waste is also considered recycling.

Planet Wise is actively involved in a recycling operation that targets a day-to-day recovery, sorting and baling of a minimum of 200 metric tons of recyclable waste materials such as Plastic (PET Bottles), Cardboard & Paper, Steel, Aluminum and Drink Cans from solid waste stream in our facility on a monthly basis.

Since the cans are 100% recyclable, we could drastically reduce the energy needed to produce brand new cans simply by recycling our empties.
